Known lag problems and proven fixes for RuneScape. Regional issues, ISP problems, and 4 optimization tips.

Known Lag Problems

These problems are reported by real players. If your region or ISP is listed, a network optimizer is likely to help.

Australia / New Zealand

50-100ms to AUS worlds, 250-320ms to UK worlds
  • Without Australian worlds (which have had datacenter outages in 2024), players face 250-300ms+ to UK/US servers
  • AUS worlds are the only solution — Jagex has no Pacific relay; when AUS worlds are down, ANZ players face unplayable conditions for PvM
  • New Zealand players are ~30ms further than Sydney, often seeing 60-90ms to AUS servers vs 280ms+ to UK
Affected ISPs: TelstraOptusTPG

Southeast Asia

160-280ms to nearest Jagex server
  • No Jagex server in Southeast Asia — all SEA players connect to UK or US worlds
  • Typical ping to UK worlds: 200-280ms from Philippines, 160-200ms from Singapore
  • Players effectively play with high latency as a baseline — PvM endgame content is significantly harder
  • Some SEA players prefer US West worlds (San Jose) which may be 30-50ms lower than UK due to Pacific routing
Affected ISPs: PLDTGlobe TelecomIndosatAIS

South America

150-280ms to nearest Jagex server
  • No Jagex server in South America — players connect to US East (Washington) or UK
  • Brazilian players typically get 150-200ms to US East, 200-280ms to UK
  • ISP routing quality varies significantly — some Brazilian ISPs route through Miami (faster to US) while others go via Europe
Affected ISPs: Claro BrasilVivoNET/Claro

How to Fix It

Try these first — they're free and solve the problem for most people.

01 Switch from WiFi to wired Ethernet

1. Connect your PC directly to your router with an Ethernet cable 2. Open Windows Settings > Network & Internet 3. Disable your WiFi adapter to force traffic over Ethernet 4. Relaunch RuneScape and check World Switcher ping

Eliminates wireless jitter (2-10ms) and wireless packet loss. Essential for consistent tick-perfect boss encounters where a single lag spike can cause a death.

General network tips (not RuneScape-specific)
02 Check your current ping via the World Switcher

1. Press W or click the globe icon to open World Switcher 2. Your current world shows your ping in milliseconds 3. Browse other worlds in your region and compare ping values 4. Switch to the lowest-ping world in your region for baseline

Diagnostic — reveals your actual connection quality to Jagex servers and whether a different world in the same region gives better ping.

03 Switch to your closest server region

1. Open World Switcher 2. Filter by region: UK (for European players), US (for North American players), AUS (for Oceanian players) 3. Pick any world in the closest region with reasonable population 4. Note the difference in ping compared to your previous world

Can reduce ping by 50-200ms if you were connected to a non-local region. UK players on a US world can see 100-150ms improvement by switching to a UK world.

04 Flush DNS and reset network stack

1. Open Command Prompt as Administrator (right-click Start > Terminal as Admin) 2. Run: ipconfig /flushdns 3. Run: netsh winsock reset 4. Run: netsh int ip reset 5. Restart your PC 6. Relaunch RuneScape

Fixes login issues and ping spikes caused by stale DNS cache or corrupted network state. Quick fix for sudden connection degradation.

Still lagging? The problem is likely your ISP's routing to the game servers.

PingAim detects RuneScape automatically

No manual config. PingAim identifies RuneScape by process name and routes it through your fastest connection using a kernel-level WFP driver.
