Why ping matters in Mortal Kombat 1
Latency sensitivity CriticalPing decides duels — sub-50ms is competitive territory.
Mortal Kombat 1 operates at 60 FPS — each frame is exactly 16.67ms. Frame-perfect inputs determine whether combos connect, reversals land, and mixups succeed or fail. A single frame (16.67ms) of ping difference can be the margin between a successful wake-up reversal and getting combo'd. While rollback netcode makes the game feel locally responsive, higher ping increases the number of rollback frames — causing visual stutters, input timing shifts, and combo drops. Competitive players report that MK1's rollback implementation adds more input delay than other modern fighting games at equivalent ping levels. Above 150ms, strict combo routes become unreliable. Frame-perfect confirms (e.g., 1-frame links) become near-impossible online above 80ms.
About Mortal Kombat 1background, studio, esports scene
Mortal Kombat 1 (internally codenamed MK12) is a 2023 fighting game developed by NetherRealm Studios and published by Warner Bros. Games. Released on September 19, 2023, it is the twelfth mainline entry in the Mortal Kombat franchise and its second full continuity reboot after the 2011 game. The story follows Liu Kang as a god restarting the universe, reshaping familiar characters in new roles.
The game features a traditional 2D fighting system on a 3D plane, a roster of classic and new characters, the new Kameo assist mechanic allowing players to call in a second fighter during combos, and a content-rich single-player Invasions mode. Two DLC packs (Kombat Pack 1 and 2) added guest characters including Omni-Man, Peacemaker, Quan Chi, Ghostface, T-1000, and Conan the Barbarian. The Khaos Reigns expansion (September 2024) added new story content and Kombat Pack 2. A Definitive Edition was released in May 2025 bundling all content. As of May 2025, NetherRealm confirmed no further DLC or story content is planned — the studio has shifted focus to its next project.
Online uses rollback netcode with WB Games servers handling matchmaking, while the actual match connection is peer-to-peer between players. The rollback implementation is NetherRealm's own (not GGPO) and has received mixed reviews — functional but considered weaker than Street Fighter 6 or Guilty Gear Strive's implementations.

PingAim detects Mortal Kombat 1 automatically
No manual config. PingAim identifies Mortal Kombat 1 by process name and routes it through your fastest connection using a kernel-level WFP driver.
When does PingAim help — and when doesn't it?
PingAim helps when...
- Phone 5G tethering available — route fight traffic through mobile data when home internet is congested
- Both WiFi and Ethernet active — ensures MK12.exe binds to the faster wired interface, not Windows default
- Streaming your match on one connection, fighting on another — keeps OBS from spiking your P2P latency
- Congested home WiFi during evening peak hours — route fight traffic to a cleaner interface
- Dual-WAN setup — PingAim picks the lower-jitter path for the P2P connection
- Windows assigned the wrong default interface after a network change
- Playing from Middle East or Southeast Asia where P2P paths are indirect and extra routing stability helps
Won't help when...
- Only one network connection available — a second interface is required to reroute traffic
- Already under 20ms to opponent with stable connection — fighting game threshold, rollback is nearly invisible
- Opponent has bad internet — rollbacks caused by their side cannot be fixed locally
- PC performance issues causing frame drops — not network related
