Why ping matters in Grim Dawn
Latency sensitivity MediumPing matters but is not the dominant factor.
Grim Dawn is a co-op action RPG, not a competitive twitch game. Ping below 150ms is generally comfortable for most content. However, P2P architecture means that high ping (200ms+) causes visible rubber-banding, delayed skill activation, and desynchronized loot drops. During combat-heavy sessions with many enemies and spell effects, the connection stress spikes significantly — players with 300ms+ ping to the host often report rubber-banding and skill misfires. Boss fights and the Crucible arena mode are the most latency-sensitive scenarios.
About Grim Dawnbackground, studio, esports scene
Grim Dawn is an action role-playing game developed and published by Crate Entertainment, released in full on February 25, 2016 after an extended early access period beginning in 2013. Set in a thematically dark fictional world loosely inspired by the Victorian era, the game casts players as survivors in a world overrun by two factions of otherworldly invaders — the Aetherials, who possess human hosts, and the Chthonians, who harvest human souls. Players explore grim, war-ravaged landscapes, complete quests with meaningful choices, and build characters through a deep dual-class mastery system spanning thirteen distinct classes in the base game and its expansions.
Built on a heavily modified version of the Titan Quest engine, Grim Dawn features real-time isometric combat with an extensive loot system, crafting, and faction reputation mechanics. The game supports up to 4-player online co-op and LAN co-op using Steam peer-to-peer networking — there are no dedicated multiplayer servers. Monster difficulty scales dynamically with party size, and players can engage in optional PvP within a session. Three major expansions have been released: Ashes of Malmouth (2017), The Forgotten Gods (2019), and Crucible arena mode (2016), with a fourth expansion Fangs of Asterkarn in development (targeting late 2025 or early 2026).
Grim Dawn has sold over 7 million units including DLC as of February 2022, making it one of the most successful indie ARPGs in the Diablo-style genre alongside Path of Exile. The game is available DRM-free on GOG in addition to Steam, with cross-play between both versions supported since version 1.1.0.0. Crate Entertainment has maintained active development and modding support throughout the game's life, deliberately allowing third-party tools, character editors, and mods.

PingAim detects Grim Dawn automatically
No manual config. PingAim identifies Grim Dawn by process name and routes it through your fastest connection using a kernel-level WFP driver.
When does PingAim help — and when doesn't it?
PingAim helps when...
- You have a phone with 5G/LTE — tether via USB and PingAim can route game traffic through it when it reaches the host faster
- You have both WiFi and Ethernet — PingAim routes Grim Dawn through whichever has lower latency to the current host
- You're connecting to a distant host (another country) and one of your connections reaches them faster than the other
- You stream while playing co-op — put the game on tethering or Ethernet, keep OBS on WiFi or vice versa
- Windows picks the wrong network interface when both WiFi and Ethernet are active
Won't help when...
- You only have one network connection with no way to add a second
- The host player has a slow upload connection — PingAim cannot fix the host's side
- You're already playing with a host geographically close to you on a good connection
- FPS drops during heavy combat (CPU-bound on the host machine, not network)
- Disconnects caused by the host's internet going down
- Because Grim Dawn is P2P, PingAim can only improve your side of the connection — if the host has a slow upload or unstable connection, no routing change on your end will fix that
