Why ping matters in The Elder Scrolls Online

ESO's server-authoritative architecture with no client-side prediction means every ability activation requires a full round-trip to the server before it executes (per Henderson & Bhatti 2003 and Raaen 2014, action-game responsiveness degrades sharply past 100ms). At 30ms ping, skills feel responsive. At 100ms, the delay becomes perceptible during rapid combat rotations. At 150ms+, maintaining complex ability rotations (weaving light attacks between skills) becomes unreliable. Cyrodiil PvP, which involves 100-300 simultaneous players in siege fights, is the extreme case — server processing load amplifies effective latency, and players regularly report 250-999ms effective latency during peak Cyrodiil battles regardless of their base ping. This is partly server-side load and partly network latency compounding. For PvE content, 150ms is generally acceptable. For competitive Cyrodiil PvP, below 80ms is strongly preferred.
